Protect Your Child: Blood Lead Testing Guidelines in California
In Humboldt County, environmental factors such as older housing, certain water systems, and exposure from hobbies or imported products can increase the risk of lead exposure in children. California requires all children enrolled in publicly funded programs like Medi-Cal, WIC, and CHDP to be tested for blood lead levels at 12 months and 24 months of age. Additionally, children up to 6 years old may need testing if there are risks of exposure or they haven't been tested before.
Why Test for Lead?
-
Lead poisoning often has no symptoms, making testing critical for early detection and prevention.
-
Even low levels of lead exposure can cause irreversible neurodevelopmental harm.
-
Screening helps identify and address potential sources of exposure.
-
It’s a state-mandated requirement to safeguard children’s health.

Common Sources of Lead:
-
Homes built before 1978 with lead-based paint or dust.
-
Water from certain lead-containing pipes.
-
Some imported candies, spices, traditional remedies, or cosmetics.
-
Toys, jewelry, or hobbies involving lead (e.g., stained glass, fishing sinkers).
-
Airports and surrounding areas due to aviation gas.

Protect your little one by asking your doctor about blood lead testing during your next visit. Early detection can make a big difference in keeping your child safe and healthy!
